Everything has a beginning, and I did too. I was born in 1965 in Bellevue, Washington. I’ve always been interested in writing. At the age of 10, while living in San Jose, California, I started my own magazine. It was written in a spiral notebook, and there was only one copy, but the magazine was my creation and I loved it. As a teenager living back in Bellevue, I continued to put pen to paper, writing poetry, short stories, and even a memoir.
After graduating from Sammamish High School in 1983, I went on to colleges. Yes, more than one. My third, but possibly not last, was the University of Oregon, where I finally decided to major in Journalism and pursue my dream of writing. I thought I could be the next Barbara Walters. Following college, I interviewed with local papers, but ended up staying in the field I knew, sales.
After meeting the man of my dreams and having my 2.5 kids (Rick came with one of his own!), I took on the roles of mother and housewife. This job is very rewarding, but as I mature, I find myself going back to my dream of writing.
My group of friends ignited the spark. Some of the friendships began in junior high and high school—some started even earlier. At one of our gatherings, we talked about how long we’d known each other. We were amazed to realize it had been 30 years; we felt that we were an anomaly. We talked about writing to Oprah, naming our group, creating a cookbook, and other great ideas. A few years later when my kids were older and needed less supervision, I decided to pick up my pen again. The impetus being a book about my beautiful friends and the closeness we’re so lucky to share.
I hope to have Friends Through the Decades completed by the end of 2009.
